MUL-T-LOCK cylinders are installed in entrance doors of apartments and offices. When keys are lost or the lock is blocked, it is important to determine the cylinder series and drive type: cam or gear.
We travel across Warsaw, perform MUL-T-LOCK lock opening and select a replacement according to dimensions, platform, and security escutcheon. We check the cylinder, drive, and main lock.
Telescopic Pins and Reversible Key MUL-T-LOCK
The reversible key can be inserted into the keyway from either side. Different series use pin mechanisms, telescopic pins, and additional code elements.
A bent or imprecisely copied key may enter the cylinder but fail to rotate properly. Do not force it with pliers: a broken piece inside the keyway will make opening more difficult.
MUL-T-LOCK Lock Opening Considering Drive Type
MUL-T-LOCK lock opening is needed when the key set is lost, the key is broken, the thumb-turn is blocked, or the cylinder fails. The technician checks whether the door was slammed shut or locked with turns, whether a key remains inside, and whether an emergency function is present.
For a cam cylinder, the transmission of motion to the lock is checked. For a gear version, the gear size and its connection to the drive are considered. If the bolts do not move, the cause may lie outside the cylinder. Work is performed after confirming access rights.
How to Identify Classic, Interactive+, MT5+ and MTL
Models include Classic, 7x7, Interactive+, MT5+, MTL400, MTL500, MTL600 and MTL800. The series affects key design, duplicate control, and compatibility with the existing system.
Markings, key shape, and the code card help identify the series. A cylinder from a different series may fit dimensionally, but the old keys will not work with it.
MUL-T-LOCK Cylinder Replacement: Cam or Gear
A new cylinder is installed when keys are lost, the keyway is damaged, there is wear, or users change. The main lock is kept if the drive and bolts are in working order.
When selecting, the following are checked:
- length of both sides;
- mounting centre;
- cam or gear drive;
- number of gear teeth;
- key-key or key-turn configuration;
- emergency function and security escutcheon;
- series and duplicate key ordering procedure.
For modular versions, the length is adjusted to door thickness. After installation, the cylinder is tested with the door both open and closed.
3IN1: Change Combination Without Removal
The 3IN1 version provides three consecutive key sets. After activating the next set, the previous combination stops working. The code can be changed up to two times without installing a new cylinder.
This option is convenient after handing over keys to tenants or employees. It is only available on cylinders originally ordered in the 3IN1 configuration.
Emergency Function with Key on the Inside
In the standard version, a key left inside may prevent opening from the outside. The emergency function allows using a second key regardless of the inner key's position.
If this feature was available on the old cylinder, it should be preserved during replacement.
What to Do If the MUL-T-LOCK Code Card Is Lost
For protected series, duplicate keys are ordered using the code card through an authorised supplier. If it is lost, the platform is identified and the key set registration is checked.
Issue of a new key depends on the series and owner verification. When data cannot be recovered, the cylinder is replaced together with the key set and card.
How to Distinguish Cylinder Failure from Drive Malfunction
If the key turns but the bolts do not move, the cam, gear, and main mechanism are checked. A thumb-turn that spins without result also indicates a break in motion transmission.
When the cylinder works under no load but jams in the door, the fit and security escutcheon are evaluated. This helps avoid replacing a working cylinder.
How to Determine MUL-T-LOCK Configuration Without Removal
For evaluation, photos of the key, the external escutcheon, the inside of the door, and the edge plate are needed. If the door is open, the cylinder is measured from the mounting centre in both directions.
Also provide:
- whether the door is open or locked;
- whether a working key is available;
- whether a code card exists;
- whether a thumb-turn is installed;
- whether the 3IN1 function was used;
- whether the key set opened other doors.
With this data, it is easier to determine the series, drive, and suitable replacement.
When the Cost Can Be Estimated from Photos
A preliminary price is given if the series, dimensions, escutcheon, and drive type are visible. The cost is affected by the opening method, gear, emergency function, modular length, and number of new keys.
An on-site inspection is needed for damaged hardware or a blocked multi-point mechanism. The total is agreed upon before parts are installed.
