Emergency opening is required when keys are lost, a door slams shut, the cylinder breaks, or the bolt jams. For a rim lock, the technician assesses the drive mechanism and external part. For a mortise lock, the cylinder insert, latch, bolt, and frame-side load are checked.
Before starting, it is determined whether the door is locked with turns, whether the key is still inside, and whether the handle moves. If a specific component is damaged, repair or replacement is discussed after opening. Work is performed only after proof of access rights.

Rim LOB models are used as a primary or additional lock. Taurus XT, Yeti XT and Cyklop XT differ in design and dimensions, so swapping one model for another without verification is not possible.
Reasons to call include the following signs:
- the key does not turn fully;
- the bolt does not retract;
- the turnpiece moves with resistance;
- the mountings have loosened;
- the door opens only when pushed.
If the bolt hits the strike opening, the door is adjusted first. If the drive mechanism is worn, a compatible model is selected.
Mortise LOB Locks and Mounting Dimensions
Mortise mechanisms vary in depth, center distance, latch position, and face plate width. Versions for euro cylinders, standard keys, and bathroom thumb-turn locks are available.
When replacing, it is important to maintain compatibility with handles, escutcheons, and the strike plate. If the required model is discontinued, an equivalent is selected by dimensions and latch direction. Sometimes the mounting recess needs adjustment.
When You Can Keep the Existing LOB Lock
When keys are lost or the keyway is worn, replacing just the cylinder insert is often sufficient. The main mechanism is kept if the latch and bolt move freely.
For a new cylinder, the following are checked:
- length and offset from center;
- cam shape;
- key-key or key-turnpiece option;
- escutcheon thickness;
- security level.
Full replacement of the LOB lock is needed when the drive mechanism is destroyed, the bolt does not hold position, the mountings are torn out, or the fault recurs.
Why the LOB Latch or Bolt Does Not Retract
The latch may stay inside due to a broken spring, handle misalignment, dirt, or pressure from the strike plate. On rim models, the cause can be mechanism shifting after the mountings loosen.
If everything works freely with the door open but resistance appears after closing, the problem is usually related to door geometry. In this case, the hinges and strike plate are adjusted. Repairing the LOB lock makes sense when the main components are not yet worn out.
One Key for Taurus XT and LOB Cylinders
Several compatible locks can be keyed alike. For an apartment this is convenient when the same set is used for the main and secondary door. In commercial premises, a Master Key system with different access levels is used.
In LOB systems, Comfort XT, Comfort Plus XT and Optima XT are available. When replacing a component, it is important to preserve the existing keying combination. A standard cylinder would disrupt the overall scheme.
What Measurements to Take Before Selecting a LOB
